Delta Zeta Memories
The Order of the Diamond (75 Years of Membership)
Dorothy Brandes Anderson Alpha Alpha ’34 (Northwestern University)
Dorothy has lived in the Los Angeles area since 1946 and worked as a reference librarian at the LA Public Library for 20 years. She retired in 1978 and moved to Vista, California where she built her own home.
Nelle Etchison Burgess Beta Delta ’34 (University of South Carolina)
Nelle was President of her chapter in 1937. Today, at the age of 94, Nelle has a full life at Rolling Green Retirement Center, where she takes weekly art classes. She lost her husband Jim in 1998. Her three children are daughter Pam and her husband, son Jim and his wife, and daughter Bonnie and her family who live in Paris, Texas. “I would love to hear from Delta Zeta sisters. Eloise Hamilton Ferling Epsilon ’34 (Indiana University)
Eloise joined Delta Zeta to follow her sister, who is also an alumna, and has remained an active member. Eloise served as Social Chairman while at Indiana University. After graduation, she worked for her brother-in-law, who practiced medicine, for four years. She then married and moved to the Great Lakes, where her husband served as a dentist in the U.S. Naval Reserve. After the birth of their first child, Eloise and her husband moved to Elkhart, where she joined the local alumnae chapter. Eloise moved to Bloomington and worked for the university at the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) and in the alumni office for 15 years. After retiring in 1980, Eloise moved to Lafayette and attended the installation of the Xi Omega Chapter at Purdue University. Eloise moved to California four years ago.
Lillie Brown Stanwood Buck Beta Theta ’34 (Bucknell University)
Lillie, a retired secondary social studies teacher, resides in New Jersey. She recently celebrated her 95th birthday and has three sons, seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Lucia Lapp Oswald Alpha Chi ’34 (University of California/Los Angeles)
Lucia attended UCLA from 1932 to 1936 and pledged Delta Zeta during her second year. She married Dr. W. Bailey Oswald after graduation and attended a post-graduate class in horticulture after they decided to plant fruit trees on their newly purchased land. They also built a ranch style home in 1938. They have one son and six grandchildren. She recently celebrated her 93rd birthday, is a member of a charitable and civic organization and donates to many charitable groups.
Patricia Mathias Seitz Alpha Iota ’34 (University of Southern California)
Patricia received her degree in education at the University of Southern California and taught primary grades for 21 years at Alta Loma schools.She has one daughter, who attended Stanford University. Patricia is still active with Delta Zeta and substitutes in a bridge group with members who are Delta Zeta alumnae.
Olga Campbell Brocklehurst Alpha Rho ’34 (Ohio Wesleyan University)
Olga currently resides in Redford, Michigan, where she taught music for grades three to six at Redford Union Schools before retiring. Olga married Gordon Brocklehurst, who has passed away, and has four children: Gordon, James, Karl and Lucinda. She is also a grandmother.
Sarah Virginia Harrod* Pi ’34 (Eureka College)
Virginia, as she was known to others, joined Delta Zeta after her older sister pledged the sorority, and the two were followed by their youngest sister. Virginia attended Delta Zeta alumnae meetings as often as possible and during the Order of the Diamond presentation, the collegiate members sang to her. Virginia attended Eureka College from 1929 to 1933, majoring in English and Latin, then earned her Masters of Art from the University of Illinois. She taught in Blue Mount, Illinois after graduation teaching English, literature and yearbook and newspaper classes. Virginia retired after 40 years and returned to Eureka where her brother and nephews live.
The Order of the Pearl (65 Years of Membership)
Georgia Caras Vasila Alpha Chi ’44 (University of California/Los Angeles)
When Georgia married in 1946, her reception was held at the Delta Zeta house at UCLA. She has four children: Andrea, Christine, Katherine and George, and six grandchildren. Spending time with her grandchildren is one of her greatest pleasures. Georgia also taught math and homemaking classes at Los Angeles Unified Schools and retired in 1986 after 27 years of teaching. She has since started playing golf and volunteers at her church. Georgia also volunteered at
a youth home for at-risk youth for almost 20 years.

As Delta Zeta recognizes her 25-, 50-, 65- and 75-year members with the special distinctions of the Silver Certificate, the Order of the Golden Rose, the Order of the Pearl and the Order of the Diamond, respectively, we asked our treasured alumnae to tell us more about themselves and their Delta Zeta experiences.
The response has been tremendous, and we thank all of you who have written to share your special stories.
